After taking early retirement following redundancy, I was on the lookout for some part time work, either payed or voluntary, that interested me. I have always been an animal lover, so when I saw the role advertised for an Animal Care volunteer, I immediately applied and more than five years later I am still here!

Animal Care is one of many sessions offered at Minstead Trust’s New Forest Day Opportunities based at Minstead Lodge. The beautiful grounds of the lodge make it a very special place to volunteer and the animals are hugely loved, much pampered and have wonderful homes to live in. The staff here are very welcoming and friendly and the people we support have been a pleasure to get to know and work with. Even those that I have never volunteered with are still always keen to introduce themselves, chat and say hello.

There is a wealth of opportunities in day services to learn new skills and try out new experiences. I have worked with many of the people being supported over the years in my role as Animal Care volunteer and it gives me great pleasure getting to know, work and laugh with them. With a little encouragement, everyone can find tasks that they are able to successfully carry out and enjoy to collectively achieve the daily work goal and it is a delight to see the joy and calming effect that some of our hairy friends have on them! Walking the donkeys in the forest, rain or shine, will always remain a favourite moment of mine.

Minstead Trust is an inspiring and rewarding place to be, offering a happy atmosphere where everyone is treated with kindness and respect.  I feel very lucky to have found such a great place to volunteer.
