“The Forgotten Army”
During World War II, British men of appropriate age were called up for military service. This left the farms and factories without a sufficient workforce. The Women’s Land Army was formed to fill this gap and women from all over the country, from all walks of life answered the call. Lilies on the Land follows the journey of four women in particular, as they undertake backbreaking work and long hours, supporting the War effort. These four women deal with the challenges with determination, fortitude and most of all, humour.
Each has their own story to tell, ranging from tractor driving, calf – birthing and much more. These women are feisty, funny and forthright. They share their experiences with humour, honesty and character.
Based on 150 letters and interviews with original Land Girls, along with songs from the period, Lilies on the Land is a revealing, funny and wonderfully moving portrait of some of Britain’s pluckiest unsung heroes.
The play has had several extensive tours throughout Britain and is a fitting tribute the “Lilies” of the WLA.
