In April, for the first time since Covid, athletes from all over the world were welcomed back to the Inclusive Skating World Championships in Hamilton, Scotland.
The competition provides an opportunity for athletes of all abilities to showcase their talents and this year the competition served as the qualifying event for the Special Olympics GB National Winter Games.
Jonathan who is a world champion in the inclusive skating world, is supported by Minstead Trust and has been skating for about 25 years and trains regularly with Team Gosport.
Prior to this event, Jonathan took part in the Inclusive Skating World Championships in Sweden for the Special Olympics in 2020.
He had a busy week in Scotland where he took part in practice runs and competed twice in the senior men’s level 2 free skating category. For his competitions he wore his lucky shirt, which proved to be good luck!
After his final competition, Jonathan was able to cheer his friends on from the sidelines. That evening he was awarded three gold medals, one for his competitions, one for his practice runs and one special Olympic gold medal.
Jonathan said he enjoyed taking part in this year’s competition and really liked, ‘seeing my friends’.
The next competition is in Turin in Italy in 2024 for the Special Olympics World Winter Games.
We are looking forward to following his progress and will be ready to cheer him on!
