Nickie’s Story: Volunteering at Furzey Gardens

Nickie’s Story: Volunteering at Furzey Gardens

I visited Furzey Gardens three years ago and loved it so much I haven’t left! I love being outdoors in all weathers and as a teacher and forest school leader I enjoy passing on my passion to others. Furzey Gardens seemed the perfect place to combine all my interests as there are so many opportunities across the Trust.

I initially volunteered at the welcome hut where I enjoyed meeting all the visitors and telling them a little about the rich history of the gardens. I liked greeting everyone, but I especially enjoyed getting to know our regulars. Over our closed period last winter, I moved to working with the garden team which means I get a workout as well as learning about the plants and gardening techniques. One of my favourite times of the day is doing my early morning litter pick, where I put on my Merlin bird app and wander around the gardens with my bin bag – it’s so peaceful. I also really enjoy working with the people we support and catching up with their news each week.

There is a real sense of camaraderie, and I have made some good friends and have a lot of fun. I also help at the other events we run, such as the summer outdoor theatre, and if you haven’t been I really recommend it. Everyone at the Minstead Trust is so friendly and kind and the gardens have such a magical, whimsical feel to them. There is always something new happening whether it is spotting an owl in the nest box, using new tools or getting to drive the tractor! But you will usually find me chatting to the robins!
