The Haven will open this autumn at Minstead Lodge, the headquarters of local learning disability charity Minstead Trust. It received support from over 150 donors during its fundraising campaign this summer.
This brand new space will give people with learning disabilities the chance to care for animals, learn new skills and build their confidence in a safe and welcoming environment.
The project will include a refitted main building, new shelters, equipment, and the purchase and care of animals such as donkeys, sheep and pigs. It will also fund hundreds of hours of extra animal care sessions each year and new Animal Assisted Wellbeing Workshops.
Adam Dodd, Chief Executive of Minstead Trust, said:
‘Reaching this target is a clear example of the unwavering belief of our community that a better world for the people we support is possible.
‘The Haven will be a sanctuary where people with learning disabilities can find calm, build confidence and feel the pride of caring for animals. Too often they are the ones being cared for – here they will be the ones giving care. That shift is powerful. We couldn’t have done it without the generosity of our supporters, and we’re so grateful to everyone who made it possible.’
The Haven is especially important because people with learning disabilities are more likely to experience anxiety and depression. The Trust has previously shown in its work that the calming effect, and responsibility, of caring for animals can make a real difference to people’s mental health.
Minstead Trust supports over 600 people with learning disabilities across the south coast. The Trust helps people develop their skills, build friendships and work towards greater independence.
