  Ceramic designing/teaching is my passion.
  With over 22 years of experience; designing the fairy door I’ve incorporated the natural beauty we are surrounded by.
  There are wall paper surface marks, handmade stamps, cookie cutters, glass, and high fired glazes to make sure the ceramic
  pieces are weather hardy-vitrified-frost proof.

  This magical door is a collaboration between artist Laura Alp and the brilliant young people and their foster carers from Hampshire Fostering Children to represent their #openyourdoor campaign. Laura ran a workshop at Furzey Gardens where the young people and their carers created beautiful paintings and designs for the door.

  The door considers perspective and looking at the world from someone else’s view.

  ‘Within our garden we have a bird house which was built by my father-in-law for my son. The bird house remained empty for some time, until a very brave little blue tit chose to make it his home. My son named him Bluey, and spent many hours watching him go back and forth from the nest to feed his young. The fairy door design is from inside the bird house, looking at the world through Bluey’s eyes.

  People with learning disabilities were guided through tracing rectangles, taping areas, and mixing and applying paints to create each unique book.
  The bookcase-door found inspiration from
  Minstead Lodge’s own library with its many shelves bursting with colourful books.
  Many of the titles depicted are thematically linked to working life at Minstead and Furzey.

  These two little fairies are pulling back the curtains on a hidden world and reveals a cloud of fireflies. Pinky purple glistening curtains pulled back by the two fairies in their own vibrant flowing dresses. Detailed wings and clothing (more than this initial design) with sprinkles of fairy dust surrounding them. A woodland in night-time Is hidden behind the curtain, dark but glowing from a hint of the moonlight and the firefly’s warmth.

  I studied Illustration at University of the West of England in Bristol in the early 2000s and have since worked as an illustrator and also painting murals for children’s nurseries and rooms.
  With Star Doors I wanted to move away from the traditional whimsical fairy stories and try something a bit different with local wildlife and fairies looking back down at earth through thevspaceship door.

• 14 The Seelie Fae - Jo Chapman | Supported by Beaumont Water Heaters

  

  Seelie Fae are typically enchanting, beautiful and gorgeous beyond measure. They glow as they ride the winds searching for humans who need help. It is said that any mortal that happens to gaze upon them will fall deeply in love with them.

  The Seelie Fae (Lucky Fairy Door) has a very Scottish flavour. The tartan incorporated in the design is based on the Ayrshire District tartan which those associated with the Dalrymple family* are entitled to wear. The letter box is a sporran and the door knocker is a thistle flower.

  *The gardens were first planted by the Dalrymple family as an informal woodland garden in 1922.

  This fairy door is designed especially for Furzey Gardens where visitors are always given a warm welcome. The design is to reflect the wonderful woodland setting and the
  enchanting secret fairy doors. It is made as a collage of many individual painted pieces; the animals are painted using oil paint and all the other pieces in acrylic paint. Each separate piece has been painted on canvas, then cut out and stuck securely onto the door.

  Bob Young lives locally near Lymington, and became involved with Furzey Gardens when they were looking for someone to repair and replace and add to the miniature fairy doors hidden around the garden.
  This inspired the ‘broken down’ theme for the trail door and for the creatures depicted.
  Read the poem attached to the door to discover more, then take a peep through the keyhole.

  We are a sister duo, Cathy Roberts and Lisa Davidson, and have been working with glass since 2005, based in Winchester.  Our main areas of work are Stained glass and fusing. Our glass work is all handmade from our original designs which are made into fused glass art and functional homeware.

  The inspiration for our fairy door lies with the vibrancy of colour…. and stars. Our ‘Starry night’ door combines both of these elements. We love how the light shines through each star against the dark glittery background.

  Inspired by the idea of a mythical land behind the door, which organically developed after drawing the never ending pathway.
  The stone and sky textures and the pathway were beautifully and patiently painted by people with learning disabilities who are supported in the woodwork workshop at
  Minstead Lodge.
  This supported trainee team also helped to produce the 30 wooden doors that have been decorated by artists for this trail.

  The door represents the naval aspect of Portsmouth, which is something the guys at Minstead Trust’s Portsmouth Day Opportunities have experienced in their city. The sailors’ travels and the tattoos they acquired as a matter of tradition and to mark where they had been and what was close to their heart to keep them safe. The guys took turns helping to paint the images and stick on the decorations.

  Emily is a Cornish born artist now living further up the coast in Hampshire. She draws inspiration from the nature around her with a big influence being the ocean & Coastline, aiming to bring the outside in.

  Emily created this door through collaboration with the art club at St. John’s Primary and Nursery School. The school is a multi-faith, multi-language school with a real community feel in Southampton.

  This door has been designed and produced by pupils at Beaulieu Primary School with local artist May Summers-Perkins. The children, aged 5 to 11, took part in workshops at the school to produce a door that depicts the school and the village of Beaulieu.

  I am involved with lots of crafty projects in Dorset, from jewellery to stage props. I wanted to create an inviting door for Watersprites to discover using recycled (mostly from the Dorset Scrapstore), biodegradable (where possible), collected and beachcombed items to create a sparkling, watery threshold.

  Our oceans and waterways are a precious and finite resource, and they are being polluted by sewage and plastics, we need to celebrate, treasure and protect them.
