Alex’s Story: Discovering community through volunteering

Alex’s Story: Discovering community through volunteering

‘Like a lot of people, I was first aware of the Minstead Trust through its work at Furzey Gardens, and then a friend invited me to the NFDO Christmas open day at the Lodge where I was bowled over by this special world in the heart of the New Forest.

‘In particular, I loved the Victorian walled garden and was amazed by the fruit and veg produced there; I couldn’t wait to get involved myself. So, I’ve been volunteering in the Minstead garden for just over a year now and have found the rewards to far exceed my expectations, and I don’t just mean in fresh seasonal veg!

‘The sense of being part of a community has grown week-on-week as I’ve got to know the supported people, staff and other volunteers who all come together to make this a rich and vibrant family. Working in the gardens in itself is fulfilling enough, watching how it changes with the seasons with no two days the same but, more than that, it’s an honour to be included in the lives of the people who are supported here. I think it’s fair to say that I came for the plants and stay for the people!’
