Alan’s Story: Volunteering in the wood workshop

‘I lost my wife fifteen years ago after twenty-seven years of marriage. Two of my three children were still at home at the time, and so life was still very busy. They have since gone their separate ways, making new lives for themselves, and although I keep myself busy, I have been seeking a new challenge which would enable me to help others but also learn some new skills for myself. I mentioned this during a conversation with my GP. She said that she had recently visited Minstead Lodge with a group of GPs and that it was “The best place I have ever been to” (her words). She assured me that I would not regret it.

‘I reached out and joined the wood workshop last November – and have enjoyed it ever since! Richard, the instructor is very tolerant of my skill limitations, and I have a smile on my face the whole time I’m there. To date, I have helped (or hindered!) the making of, amongst other things; snowmen, tables, charcuterie boards, bird boxes, bug boxes and, more recently, aliens and spaceships. The instructors, supported people and other volunteers are a great bunch. My one regret is that I didn’t join years ago. I would highly recommend volunteering at Minstead Trust to anyone. The activities and opportunities are so numerous that there is bound to be something you can contribute to, and to quote my GP “You won’t regret it!”.’
